Podcast-tastic

I'm finally getting up to speed with downloading podcasts to my non-iPod mp3 player. Considering the state of L.A. radio, and my lack of any satellite radio subscription, this is a nice alternative to listening to my music (which I still do...I just like options). I'm finding it very useful in the mornings. I'm an NPR junkie and like that kind of programming on my drive to work. However, I listen in the shower and while getting ready for work. By the time I get in my car, NPR begins to repeat.

So, what shows am I'm enjoying? For awhile now, I've listened to GeeksOn with Eric. One of the geeks is a friend of ours. It's a fun show, but a bit heavy on the video game geekiness for me, as I'm just not into gaming so much. On Ren's recommendation, I checked out The Word Nerds. Their podcast is great! Another favorite is Science Friday. I love the show, but often miss it, so now I can catch up. There are also several NPR podcasts on subjects ranging from the media to technology to pets.

I had to make some room on my player to use it for the occasional podcast. I had nearly filled the 20 gigs with music. How often was I really listening to The Lord of the Rings trilogy soundtracks? Rarely to never, so I removed some stuff like that. 95% of the music on my mp3 player is ripped from my own cd collection anyway. And the other 5% is from Ren's.

Hi Jodi! If you're looking for a fiction podcast, I highly recommend Escape Pod - excellent SF/F introduced with amusing commentary from Stephen Eley. And he's had the excellent taste to buy and podcast a couple of my stories :).

5%? really? how did you get that much listenable music from my crappy collection?

also...my cat only bites people she likes, if she didn't like you she would hide under the couch. it's a love bite, baby, just a little love bite.

also also...i have yet to listen to an entire episode of the word nerds. i have listened to parts of several but i never have the time to listen to an entire episode!

Okay Ren, 5% may have been generous, because I didn't include the crappy stuff I had for Eric for road trips before he had his own player.

don't get me wrong. you are certainly welcome to all my ratt, poison, sebastian bach and opera. i'm sure it beats eric's moody blues and asia...or james' survivor and journey. i may have crappy tastes but at least i don't own any of THAT!

No thanks...I could get that crap from my family! (well, not the opera!) I borrowed Bowie, The Jam, New York Dolls...cool stuff from you! I made a rule...no Asia on my mp3 player EVER. But, I did have the entire Todd Rundgren catalog on it (some of which I do like) which all got deleted.

RE: Word Nerds...I usually listen to all podcast in several sessions. Also, I fast forward through their songs. I'm not so into that.

Oh, and Ren, regarding dear Audrey...I was going to make your link "Ren's Cat Hates Me," but I thought that was a bit harsh. I don't know that it's hate, but she doesn't care for my canine scent I'm sure.

BTW, would she like a tent? I bought one for Little Guy, but he doesn't fit in it!

Science Friday is one of my favorites, too. If you're every looking for a photography one, tipsfromthetopfloor.com is the best I've found so far. The intros/music can get annoying, but his actual photo tips are really good and they're short, usually less than 10 minutes.
