you know, there are men called carroll and leslie and lindsey and such, i don't see why ami should be any different. or you could always just go with his first name. he wouldn't be the first boy called puffy.
I figured out at about year 5 that Baxter was really a girl. (She didn't cotton to me picking her up and petting her tummy so I never noticed she was not a boy.) She just kept the name Baxter.
Considering we tend to whack the gender-defining traits off most of our domestic pets anyhow, what does it matter? I think Ami is just great. I think you could even keep on considering it a "her" if you like. Besides, as long as you keep Ami separated from other hammies, you can just keep on pretending you have no idea, right?

"Well, I see Scraps is a boy dog, Jimmy. Do you ever - go to a turkish bath?" :)

Hrm. Amis? Ani? Ames? Poor gender-confused hammie.

Ooh... plus that guy on Miami Ink is named Ami and he's pretty butch. I think you can keep Ami.
Yeah, I'm sticky with Ami and the plethora of nicknames I already gave the critter. Ami-Ham is usually what I end up calling him.
